If you don’t own the latest generation Garmin navigator, it’s rather difficult to get new map updates.
The latest models come with free lifetime map updates, so it’s fairly easy to update using Garmin Express.
However, if you own an older device such as Garmin Nuvi 255, things get a little trickier.
The first step is to buy a microSD card, as the memory of Nuvi 255 is not large enough to fit new maps.
The GPS can accommodate an 8GB microSD card, so look for a card that provides this capacity as well as having a class 10 rating for reading/writing.
Once you have the card, you need to acquire the City Navigator map for Garmin Nuvi.
It can be downloaded or bought from various sources, including official channels.
After you have downloaded the map, you will notice a file holding the IMG extension. Rename it to GMAPSUPP.IMG – unless it’s already named that way.
Make sure you don’t double the extension when renaming.
The next step is to connect the MicroSD card to your PC by means of a card reader.
You can also insert the card in your GPS then connect it to the computer via USB cable.
Access the card and create an empty folder named Garmin. Copy the IMG map file to the folder.
Disconnect the GPS from the computer once the copy process is completed successfully.
Access the settings menu on the GPS then select Map. Finally, press Map Info. You should see the new map installed and ready to be used.
Uncheck boxes for older maps and keep only the latest one to avoid errors.
That’s it! You have now a fully update Garmin Nuvi 255, featuring the latest maps.
