Sony Z9D 4K LED TV Calibration Settings

Best picture settings for Sony Z9D

Mini review Sony Z9D

Sony Z9D is one of the best TV in the brand’s lineup. It comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and has amazing local dimming performance. Also, it is great for HDR since it can get extremely bright. However, a considerable amount of motion blur is noticeable and the view angle is sub-par.

The TV comes in 65”, 75” and 100”. The screen rests on a small support, which allows the TV to get close to a wall. Unfortunately, inputs become harder to access when the TV is close to the wall.

Before calibrating Z9D’s settings, be aware that each input features its own settings, thus you will need to redo the process for each media input you plan on using.

Picture settings

Given its large size, this TV will work best with movies and TV shows. Thus, set the Picture Mode to Custom.

A Brightness of 2 is perfect for a completely dark room. Increase the value to adjust for the brightness of your room.

Make sure to turn off Light Sensor and Auto Picture Mode.

Next, go to Brightness tab and set Contrast to Max.

Leave Gamma at 0.

Disable Black Adjust and Adv. Contrast Enhancer.

Keep Auto Local dimming and X-tended Dynamic Range on.

Color settings

In the Color tab, leave Color and Hue to their default values (50 and 0).

Set Color Temperature to Expert 1.

Turn off Live Color to avoid unwanted image processing.

Switch to Clarity Tab.

Leave Sharpness at 50 and turn off Reality Creation.

Random Noise Reduction, Digital Noise Reduction and Smooth Gradation should all be turned off. It is worth turning them on only if you play older, low resolution content.

In the Motion tab, leave Motionflow and Cinemotion off.

However, setting Motionflow to Custom and increasing Smoothness may help with motion blur in high-paced videos.

HDR detection is performed automatically by the TV, so no input on your side is necessary.

The only change required for gaming (either in SDR or HDR) is to switch Picture Mode to Gaming and go through the above settings once more.
